Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater harvesting is something we are very excited about here at Cedar Run. In its simplest form, rainwater harvesting is the collection and storage of rainwater for later use, or the system can be designed to slowly release the stored water back into the ground.
At our nursery in North Wales, we have installed three rainwater harvesting systems to date, with a combined storage capacity of 4,500 gallons. We use the water from these systems regularly to water our nursery stock, wash our trucks, and refill our ponds and water features.
If the amount of rainfall exceeds the storage capacity of the collection systems, they overflow into rain gardens, allowing the excess water to seep back into the earth. In fact, since the first system was installed in the summer of 2008, we have retained over 150,000 gallons of water just at our office!
A few of the benefits of rainwater harvesting systems include helping to prevent runoff which leads to local stream contamination and stream bank scouring and lowering your dependence on public or well water.
